House Mouse

House Mouse are very social in behavior, very inquisitive about things in their environment, always ready to explore anything new. These are the most common rodents found throughout the United States. These rodents prefer to nest in dark secluded areas where there is little chance of disturbance, and in areas where nesting materials, such as paper, cardboard, attic insulation, cotton, etc., are readily available.

Habits

The house mouse is gray in color and weighs ½ to 1 ounce. Its body and tail is 3 - 4 inches each in length. It has a pointed muzzle, large ears with comparatively small eyes and body. House mouse are good climbers, they can jump up to 12 inches high, and can also jump down from a height of eight feet. They easily squeeze through holes and gaps wider than just ¼-inch.

These pests forage in small territories, usually no more than 20 feet, and they even nest within four to five feet from an abundant food source. They feed at dusk and just before dawn, on seeds and cereals. The major health risks associated with house mouse are salmonella contamination and leptospirosis, a rare bacterial infection causing the enlargement of spleen, jaundice and nephritis.

In 35 days, the female house mouse reaches sexual maturity and can produce an average of eight litters per year, each of which averages six young ones. Therefore, their population can build up rapidly. Spring is when they usually produce their largest litters, and begin to breed at 5 - 6 weeks of age. The life span of house mice is one year.
